Call this a “first sighting”. Notebook Italia has found some information about an Asus MeMO ME570T tablet. The next question of course is what is it? Well it really makes sense that this is that rumored new Nexus tablet. If you recall, the current Nexus 7 goes by the product name ME370T.
What is a ME570T? I would suggest the higher the number, the better quality. Just a hunch. I would suspect that Asus and Google are not going to be able to create a $99 Nexus. However, these same rumors suggested a higher end Nexus 7 which is thinner. Could it be possible that a MeMO 570 is a Nexus 7 HD tablet with a slightly higher or similar $199 price tag? Could be. By the time this tablet gets to market, Google could drop the Nexus 7 to $149 or less, and then introduce a Nexus 7 HD tablet.
On the other hand, let’s not forget about the possibility of a Nexus 10. I’m still convinced that the Nexus 10 is coming sooner than later. I assumed it was the TF500, but perhaps the ME570T is that Nexus 10. A new 10-inch Nexus tablet makes a lot more sense than a new 7-inch Nexus tablet which might be thinner with a higher resolution display. If it’s the same size, wouldn’t that just irritate the consumers who just bought into the current Nexus 7. Yes for sure. Remember how people felt about Asus when they showed off the Transformer Infinity while people were just starting to get their Transformer Prime pre orders filled? They were angry! I could see a similar angst with such a quick update to an existing and new Nexus 7. A 10-inch Nexus 10 won’t cause the same uproar and will certainly put Google in a strong fighting position against all comers including Windows tablets, Amazon tablets and Nook tablets.
A long long while ago it was Asus who was rumored to be releasing a cheap tablet which was to be priced less that $200. That was such a long time ago, however it leads me to another theory. Since the ME370T became the Nexus 7, is it possible that Asus themselves want to release one of their own 7-inch tablets? They haven’t released one to date, so it’s still possible that the Asus ME570T has nothing to do with Google. That would support their stance on the recent rumors that they are not working on a new 7-inch Nexus tablet with Google. Perhaps it’s their own 7-inch Android tablet and Google isn’t a part of it. Asus has had the Eee Reader and the Eee Note which were not really part of their official Eee Pad line-up, but they have the innovation to create a low priced tablet slash ereader device.
Let’s hope for more leaks. Unlikely, but let’s hope!
